Angel Of The Bars
03:43
|
|||
And the prophets and homeless guys as she walks down the street
Concede prayers and avert their eyes
Receive relief
Please angel of the bars
Take this gift of ours
Now it's not so hard to believe
And she battles the darkness beneath Harvard Square T
And me and her and St. Conrad all ride for free
She's the angel of the bars
Who parks heaven's cars
And still my guitar gently weeps
Now it's a new morning
But not anymore than it has a reason to be
And we walked to the lands edge
And then we stood by the sea
To see her coming in glory down I-93
Please angel of the bars
Take this gift of ours
Now it's not so hard to believe

Blind
07:33
|
|||
There was a man who saw everything
So clearly it hurt his eyes
He got a gun and shot it at the sun
And said "Don't shine on me, I'll go blind"
She always told him the honest truth
But all that he heard were lies
Made sure himself she'd look at no one else
Threw bleach in her pale blue eyes
And for today I could see you when I close my eyes and
Just for one day maybe I'd become obsessed
And for today I would meet you on the other side and
Just for one day I could rest
I drew your picture from memory
Permanently in the sand
I keep it clean and locked away unseen
I keep it at my right hand
And for today I could walk along the golden road and
Just for one day maybe I could do with less
And for today I could give up everything I own and
Just for one day I could rest
And for today I could finally make a leap of faith and
Then on that day maybe I would fail the test
And the next day I would pack it up and go back home and
Just for one day I could rest

Everyone's Expense
02:54
|
|||
Found you in a dream
You said it wasn't real
So lets meet for the time
No answer to reveal
Lost in other worlds
Confused by different styles
People standing by
Preaching their own lies
Call it real insanity
Call it what you like
Keep my dreams away from me
But keep them in my sight
Hope you enjoyed my stay
But now I've got to go
Don't know where we'll end up
So grab on for a toe
Call it real insanity
Call it what you like
Take my dreams away from me
But keep them in my sight
Sure we might find a way
To have our lives make sense
But can it be worth doing
At anyone's expense
At everyone's expense

Evaporation
04:26
|
|||
I get in late on Monday
Oh please just give me one day to feel the ground I'm walking upon
While you've been watching your step
I'm watching from a doorstep
Behind the blinds the lights go off and on
Fearing recrimination
If I don't know my place
Ah well, it's like evaporation
It's gone without a trace
I hear about how your date went
No sense of understatement
I make it up as they go alomng
I don't know how to stop the casting of this soap opera
Always afraid I'll get my lines wrong
In closing, in frustration
I don't know what you mean
Ah well, it's like evaporation
It ends up dry and clean
Just trying to walk on the ground
And not the other way round
Wasting another beautiful day
Attempt at nervous laugher
Anxious and edgy after
Meanwhile one more perfect things slips away
Force quit the conversation
'Cause I've done nothering worn
Ah well, it's like evaporation
It's here and then it gone

You taste the rod you taste olé
You get down on your bended knees and pray
Their cold cold heart will maybe start to melt
But you do not love Jesus like I love myself
You do not love Jesus like I love myself
You only hold me pretending I'm someone else
He forgives all your whimpered cries for help
But you do not love Jesus like I love myself
You taste the rod you taste the staff
You get down on your bony knees and laugh
Your cheating heart will make me use the belt
Cause you do not love Jesus like I love myself
Let us pray
You taste the rod you taste the whip
You get down on your broken knees and drip
Your crazy heart will rape the deepest welt
Cause you do not love Jesus like I love myself
You do not love Jesus like I love myself
You only hold me pretending I'm someone else
He forgives all them shot-drenched pleas for help
But you do not love Jesus like I love myself
Well you do not love Jesus like I love myself

Kings
05:43
|
|||
Watching the sun go down way beyond the edge of town
And standing holdhanding evergreen and oak
Now I can't hear the road and it's getting kinda cold
Revealing our breathing in a cloud of smoke
There were kings here but they all got washed away
We can watch their pictures on TV
They know all things we never got to say
Do you hear them or is it just me
Not ready to go in in spite of the piercing wind
Finally unduly quiet when it dies down
You can really see the stars in this place we think is ours
But I wonder what's underneath our feet right now
There were kings here but they all got washed away
Now they're under glass ina museum
They know everything we never got to say
Or we only spoke of in a dream
Rise and fall
We arrived and wondered where you'd gone
Is that all
This was never meant to last too long
If in a thousand years someone else is walking here
And standing holdhanding underneath the trees
Maybe they won't recall we were ever here at all
But I'm glad how we're here now
I guess that's all we need
There were kings here but they all got lost away
Guess they couldn't make it on their own
They know though we never had a lot to say
Do you hear them or am I alone
